After filing her nominations, former chief minister J Jayalalithaa’s niece Deepa, who was clad in a sari, termed her bid as only to win Jayalalithaa’s legacy. Casting aspersions on the independence of the Election Commission, she doubted that her nomination itself might be rejected. She also clarified that she is not aping her aunt by wearing a sari. She discounted TTV Dinakaran’s chances in the by-elections and said the major contenders are the AIADMK and the DMK.
Independents boo Tamilisai
When BJP candidate Karu Nagarajan filed his papers accompanied by the party’s state unit president Tamilisai Soundararajan on the last day to file the nominations, independent candidates criticised her for jumping the queue. However, she managed to pacify them along with the police personnel. “Many had taken the poll plunge and the plane of election is not new to us. We are in the fray with our heartfelt contentment. We will put an end to all speculations,” she said. “Our contest should be deemed unique and not isolated,” she added.
