Country’s 1st Potter-themed Xmas pantomime in city
Come next week, Chennai will stage a fascinating Harry Potter Christmas pantomime, touted to be the first-of-its-kind in India, said Aysha Rau of the Little Theatre group. Given that it’s such a popular theme, it’s perhaps surprising that the concept hadn’t been explored thus far – but this group of Chennaiites is set to make this Christmas as magical as possible for fans!

“Last year, we did Star Wars, and this year, we really wanted to appeal to the younger generation. This is our 23rd Xmas pantomime, and we have made it better than ever. It’s titled ‘Happy Potter and the Egg of Destiny’ – since it’s a musical,” Aysha said.
The storyline follows the great schools of magic compete in the Grand Sorcerer’s Tournament to win the Egg of Destiny – the most powerful object in the world. The chosen ones from brave Hogwarts, the beautiful Bellebatoms and conniving Mudpots compete in the dangerous tournament. With twists and turns, ghosts and elves, the underdog heroes go on an epic journey to find friendship, happiness and love, as they try to stop the evil Lord.
Starring a host of children as well as adults, the musical is directed by Prashanth Oliver, while the artistic director is B Krishnakumar and the composer is Kavita Baliga. Prashanth said, “The cast has a lot of talented kids (some as young as eight years old), and adults too. In fact, nearly 200 people from Chennai responded to our casting call and got auditioned! There’s going to be a lot of slapstick comedy, dancing, music and grandeur, and we have tweaked the script to ensure than even non-Harry Potter fans enjoy it.”
Slated to be held at the Museum Theatre Egmore from December 8 to 13, it looks like the boy wizard looks to enthrall Potterheads all over again!
