‘Swiping’ right saved this Chennai boy in Croatia

Chennaiite Rohith Subramanian (23) first made news a couple of years ago, when he sold his company to bike across the world. Having traversed 23 countries by now (on his Royal Enfield bike) over six months, the Tamilian, who terms himself ‘The Lone Wanderer’ on his social media platforms, recently got into trouble at Zagreb, the capital of Croatia – what came to his rescue? The dating app Tinder!

“I was travelling from Budapest, but denied entry into Croatia at the border due to my unkempt appearance. They thought I was a smuggler, and stripped me down to check me. At this time, my bike also had broken down as I ran out of fuel! I was stranded on the highway, with the nearest gas station a couple of hours away.. I was panicking,” recalls Rohith.

It was then, inexplicably, he decided to open the Tinder app of all things on his phone, and started swiping away right. “In a few minutes, I had a match with a local woman! Instead of the usual hellos and flirting, I explained my situation to her. She soon came to the spot with a can of fuel, and a sandwich. With her help, I was able to solve all my problems,” says the youngster.

How did he repay her? “Well, she said she’s never been on a motorcycle before, so I took her for a ride on my Enfield. I also took her to a nice dinner the next day to thank her properly... we are still in touch,” adds Rohith, who is now in London.

The travelling enthusiast, who will reach India, later this week, next plans to do a three- month tour of India in a caravan with his friends, after which he will continue his global odyssey by travelling to South and North America.
