Garbage carts parked on Perungalathur streets irk residents

When Krishna Kumar (50) moved to suburban Perungalathur from the city, he was hoping to lead a happy and healthy life in the suburbs, away from the noise and pollution of the city. But what happened was the opposite of what Krishna Kumar wanted. Every morning when he wakes up and comes for a walk, the only thing he can see everywhere are piles of garbage dumped by the road.

Not just Krishna Kumar, everyone from the locality faces a similar problem. Srinivasan, an IT professional, alleged that the entire neighbourhood appears like a slum and that during the rainy season, the smell is unbearable.

Savithri, another resident of Perungulathur said, “Every time when I walk through the streets, I cannot walk freely because of the smell. I need to cover my face and am always apprehensive that my children will fall sick due to the garbage easily during the rainy season.”

The situation at Balaji Street is in a far worse condition, as four garbage carts are parked at the entrance of the street, which boasts a church, apart from several homes. Residents of Kalaignar Nedunchalai, one of the busiest roads in the locality, besides several other areas, suffer as cycle carts filled with garbage are parked on these streets from the late of afternoon till the next morning.

Vasantha, a member of the women’s self-help group said that a number of complaints have been forwarded to the officials by the NGO’s and the church officials, but no action has been taken till date.

“Only our suffering continues,” she said. Since the open carts are parked on the streets, some of the residents throw their waste and other stuff into them and this has resulted in it become a haunt for street dogs and cows that feed on the garbage.

Shantha Jayakumar, Executive Officer (EO) of the Peerkankaranai town panchayat, said that no proper place has been allocated for them to park the vehicles and thus some of the workers are parking at a spot that is convenient for them.

“Besides, only a 50 cents space has been given to us to dump the garbage which is not sufficient to meet the requirement.

We have asked for more space and when it comes our problems will be solved,” she claimed.
