Chennaiyin FC fans indulge in racism against NE girls
The morning after a resounding 3-0 win against NorthEast United in the ISL, football team Chennaiyin FC has been receiving heavy backlash after a video of the club’s fans indulging in racism at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium on Thursday evening was widely circulated.
Chennai
In the video shows a local Chennaiyin supporter harassing North East girls at the stadium. In what seems to be both an act of racism and eve-teasing, the youth (who appears to be drunk) and his friends continue to mock the girls for some time, while the surrounding onlookers remained apathetic.
Many NEUFC supporters have taken to talking about their personal ordeals at these games on social media, alleging that this incident isn’t a one-off. The President of the Northeast India Welfare Association in Chennai has also been informed about the incident.
Mohammed Saif, a TCS employee from the city, said that last year during the same fixture, there was a fight over racist taunts. “Banter and harmless trolling are always fun, but some fans went overboard. Around 12-15 guys, all teenagers, started beating up some North East boys. Then, some of us intervened and stopped it from getting worse.”
In the wake of this controversy, the club responded, saying, “Chennaiyin FC has a very strict policy against racism and any unbecoming behaviour in the stadium. The club strongly condemns any such act. We are looking into any such incident and we will take strong action against it,” he said. Chennaiyin striker Jeje Lalpekhlua, added on his Twitter account that an investigation into the incident was under way.
Meanwhile, NEUFC owner John Abraham said he would meet the girls and assuage them for the unfortunate incident.
