Food safety officials inspected the motel, named Thanthai Periyar Unavagam, and found the allegations to be true. Since the motel posed a major health risk to passengers visiting there, Food Safety and Drug Administration Commissioner P Amudha ordered immediate closure of the eatery and a notice in this regard was pasted at the entrance.

Though the motel staff tore the notice on Monday morning, TNSTC buses avoided the motel as instructed. An improvement notice was issued to the motel administration on October 23, after which the officials decided to shut it as there was no proper reply.

Inaugurated in 1990 by the then Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, the motel used to cater to thousands of passengers of every day. However, the quality of food served deteriorated of late, while the price was doubled. Recently, the maintenance of the toilets too was leased out to a private agency. Sources in TNSTC said that though the building belongs to the corporation, the catering and maintenance were given to contractors. Apart from the motel, several snack shops are also present in the complex.
