Murthy insists on need to accelerate pace of innovation

Speaking at the SRM University’s 13th convocation on Saturday, he said, “We live in an extraordinary era. Never has competition been as intense, opportunities as huge and challenges as daunting. It is because of one significant phenomenon - globalisation.” “The implication of globalisation is that corporations are facing extreme competition, the pace of innovation is faster; you have to quickly develop your ideas and innovate faster than your competitors,” he added. 

Dwelling on the theme ‘Being a global manager’, Narayana Murthy explained, “A global manager is a management professional whose aspiration is global, who benchmarks performance on a global scale, whose mind is unconstrained by national boundaries, whose arena is the globe and who is comfortable in dealing with many cultures.” Also, calling upon the students to be good leaders, he said the leaders of tomorrow must build a strong value system and be open to new ideas and have high learnability. “A manager must practise meritocracy and must be transparent in all his transactions,” he said. 

Further, he also wanted the young graduates to aspire for excellence. He said, “Unless you are a happy person at home, you cannot be happy in the office. Success in life is when others’ eyes light up when you walk into a room, and your eyes light up when you are with others. Share jokes with your colleagues. Make your colleagues and family happy.” Over 6,000 graduates and 47 doctoral graduates received their degrees. Dr Shekar Basu, Secretary, Department of Atomic Energy, received the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Science.
