Veggie prices fall, eggs turn expensive
The price of vegetables has taken a slight dip in the Koyambedu wholesale market and other retail outlets in the city. Traders attribute this to the reduction of rain in the state and Karnataka, and the increase in arrival of vegetables to Chennai.
Chennai
The price of shallots (sambar onion), which had shot up to Rs 200 last week fell by Rs 50 on Friday. Representatives of trade unions attributed the reduction in the price of shallots to the good inflow and dry weather after heavy spells of rain.According to traders, the cost of vegetables like chayote (chow chow), shallots, drumsticks, plantains and other commodities, have fallen by 20 to 30 per cent. Customers have also begun to flock to Koyambedu wholesale market, once again.
V R Soundararajan, member, Market Management Committee and Koyambedu Wholesale Traders Association, said, “As of now, price of a sizable number of vegetable has reduced but the price of some vegetables remain unchanged.” he said and added that prices could fall further in the coming days.
“It has nearly been 10 days since I purchased vegetables in the Koyambedu market, because of the high cost. However, on hearing that prices of some vegetables have fallen, I decided to add to my stock,” said K Vasanth, a small vendor of Iyyappanthangal.
Egg price soars
Meanwhile, the price of eggs has increased from Rs 4.76 to Rs 5.16. However, retail vendors in the city are selling an egg for Rs 6 in the local markets. V Subramaniam, vice- president, Tamil Nadu Egg Poultry Farmers Association told DT Next, “There is a slight rise in the price of eggs. However, price fluctuation is normal. For instance, the price of egg was last week Rs 4.59 and subsequently it was Rs 4.74. The main reasons are huge consumption and demand during winter season. Further, the rising price of vegetables is also another factor.”
