Gang drills hole, flees with 3.5 kg gold from Kolathur shop

In what could be termed as repeat of the infamous cash heist in a money wagon attached to a Salem–Chennai train in August 2016, where robbers escaped with Rs 5.75 crore cash after breaking open the roof of a compartment, unidentified men have drilled a hole on the roof of a jewellery shop in Kolathur and escaped with nearly 3.5 kg gold jewels, along with other valuables on Thursday afternoon.

The gang had rented the room above jewellery shop in the guise of setting up a cloth store. The burglary, which reportedly was committed during the day, took place at Mahalakshmi jewellery located on Retteri– Kadappa Road that falls within the Rajamangalam police limit.

The owner of the shop, Mukesh Kumar. is a resident of Sri Nagar in Kolathur.

Sources said that around 3.5 kg gold jewels, 4 kg silver and Rs 2 lakh in cash were reportedly missing from the shop.

Police suspect that at least 3 persons should have been involved in the burglary and released the CCTV footage of the suspects. The incident happened when the shop owner went for home for lunch.

“The jewellery shop is on the ground floor while there is an empty room on the first floor of the building, just above the shop. A group of north Indian men had come to look at the first-floor room a fortnight back, saying that they are interested in renting the room to set up a cloth store. On Thursday, they came in the guise of setting up the cloth shop and made a hole on the floor to enter the jewel shop below,” the police said.

It looked like one man entered the shop, lifted the jewels and handed them to the men on the first floor. They had emptied all the cases, stuffed the gold and silver articles into gunny bags, left the empty boxes on the first-floor room, before escaping from the spot at 2.41 pm, police said referring to the CCTV footage.
