Poachers make a beeline to Chennai's brimming water bodies
The inflow into water bodies in Kancheepuram district has paved the way for poachers to hunt both resident and migratory birds. Recently, Forest department staffers arrested four poachers in Kancheepuram.

According to officials, Kancheepuram district has received good rainfall, filling up the water bodies and attracting a number of birds. Immediately, poachers from Tiruvallur, Arakkonam and other areas started arriving, to poach the birds and sell them in various parts of suburbs.
Meanwhile, bird watchers are also monitoring the poaching and passing on information to the forest department. “Though rains have given opportunity for hunters, who are visiting the waterbodies with country made guns and other poaching material, we are patrolling the waterbodies,” said Sachin Ghosale, District Forest Officer of Kanchipuram district. “We have formed a couple of teams to ensure there is no poaching,”, he added.
