Heavy rain returns to Chennai, many roads flooded
Even though the sky remained overcast on Sunday, moderate to heavy rain lashed many parts of the city on Sunday night.

The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has predicted that since a low-pressure area over South-West Bay of Bengal and its neighbourhood is still persisting over the same area and adjoining Sri Lanka, heavy to very heavy rain or thundershowers are likely to occur over Chennai and its suburbs for short period on Sunday night, while same conditions will prevail on Monday.
Areas like Taramani, Koyambedu, Anna Nagar, Nungambakkam, Egmore, Perungudi and other parts of the city received heavy rains and it affected normal movement in the city. As usual, roads were flooded within a short period, causing hardship to pedestrians and drivers.
Speaking to DTNext, Dr S Balachandran, Director, Area Cyclone Warning Centre, said, “There will be heavy spells for a short period, while moderate rains will continue in Chennai and other interior districts.
We are monitoring the satellite models and there is no sign of any alarming situation.” The weather expert added that whenever there is a possibility of heavy rain, they would alert the officials and public.
A city-based weather blogger said, “The low-pressure in the Bay and the rain bands decided to stay off the coast all night long, making it an anti-climax for weather watchers and the common public, who were eagerly waiting for the rains on Saturday night after the small break the North-East monsoon went through.
Models indicating bulk of rains falling just off the coast and a slight shifting of the low-pressure area to the West would mean the rain falling over the land. Further, places along the coast still remain vulnerable to a spell or two of heavy rains on Sunday night and Monday evening,” he added.
