Roof leak in buses common during rains, but MTC sitting cool: Public

Rains have exposed the shoddy conditions of Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) buses. Passengers complain that rainwater leaks through the roofs and windows, and seeps into floors. Some commuters say that even though they have two wheelers, they prefer travelling in buses during rainy season to avoid getting drenched, but they feel inconvenient while taking MTC buses due to leakage.

According to commuters, the issue has become a routine for MTC buses during rainy season. The officials should have taken up maintenance works before the onset of the rainy season so that commuters can travel without getting wet inside the buses, say passengers.

“I use MTC buses for travelling regularly and water leaks through the holes on the roof top of the buses or windows happen during monsoon. Many seats, especially the ones near the windows, are vacant in almost all the buses due to the leakage of rainwater. Even if the windows are closed, rain water seeping from the roofs will drench the commuters,” said K Elamaran, a commuter, who takes a bus (71E) to reach Broadway from Avadi regularly. Also in some buses, windows would remain stuck resulting in passengers being unable to close it during rains, he added.

Another issue is that commuters, who stand near ventilators, face similar woes. “Most ventilators fail to work resulting in rainwater directly hitting the floor of the bus,” said K Balaji, another commuter, who lamented about the miserable conditions of Government buses. With water flooding the streets, many buses also breakdown, leaving the passengers to look for alternative transport options.

When contacted, V Krishnamurthy, Managing Director of MTC, said, “We have instructed the officials to take up regular maintenance works, since there has been continuous rain. Further, we have also instructed the bus crew, like drivers and conductors, to register feedbacks of commuters.” The MD has also assured of considering the issue seriously.
