Patients moved as flood water enters GH ward

It was a harrowing time for around 50 patients, including pregnant women and young mothers nursing their newborns at the Tambaram Government Hospital in Chrompet. Despite precautionary measures taken by the staff to prevent the flooding of the ground floor, the patients lodged there had to shifted in the thick of the night to the first floor as water entered the ward.

Such a situation is not new to the hospital as it faced a worse situation in 2015 when the hospital was submerged in water to an extent of five feet and patients had to be moved out of the hospital in boats and stretchers.

“In a bid to be better prepared, we had put up sand sacks up to 10 feet at the entrance to prevent too much water from entering the premises. Doctors, nurses, patients and others had to try to climb over to enter. But water still entered the ground floor,” said a source from the hospital. The hospital had also been urging the PWD to repair broken pumps considering how old they were.

Health Minister Dr C Vijaya Baskar had visited the hospital on Friday and allotted a sum of Rs 27 lakh for upgradation. He urged the hospital authorities to purchase new equipment to avoid a repeat of the same. It has been reported that as a precautionary measure, the hospital will not accommodate patients on its ground floor rooms for the next one month. Chief Medical Officer Dr Inbavalli could not be reached when DTNext tried to contact her.
