The animal welfare and protection centre at Velachery on Friday got 76 complaints about the presence of snakes in the water-logged areas. The officials rescued a total of 63 snakes, including two Cobras. Moreover, it is said that as many as 13 snakes escaped before the forest staff reached the spot.

The snakes were caught from Sholinganallur, Karapakkam, Chitalapakkam, Medavakkam, Pallikaranai, Ambattur and Avadi. Velachery forest ranger T Murugesan said, “During 2015 floods, we got only 40 to 50 calls a day but on Friday we got 76 calls, which is the highest.”

He also appealed to the public not to subject themselves to any risk by trying to catch a snake or kill it, which is against the law. “If the snake is seen anywhere call us at 044-22200335 and we will soon reach the spot and catch it,” he said.
