When the first bench, comprising Chief Justice Indira Banerjee and Justice M Sundar, commenced their proceedings on Thursday, advocate George William made a mention about the issue.Â
He said that the deaths have occurred owing to sheer negligence of the government and its authorities, who failed to rectify the faulty wires even after repeated complaints from the locals. He sought the court to suo motu take up the issue to prevent any such incidents and to ensure adequate compensation to the families of the deceased.Â
To this, the government pleader present in the court submitted that the government has already initiated action against officials responsible and that eight personnel of TNEB in charge of the area have been suspended. When the bench asked about the compensation provided to the families of the victims, the Government pleader submitted that he would provide the information on Friday.Â
However, the bench, seeking a report on the incident, said that they would take up for hearing a batch of PILs filed on the December deluge of 2015 by next week and offered liberty to the advocate to implead himself in the pleas.
