Rise in level of lakes jitter suburbs

The incessant rains and the rapid rise in the water levels of the lakes in Kancheepuram district are triggering unease among residents living in areas beyond South Chennai. They are unable to forget the memories of the 2015 floods caused by breaches due to overflowing lakes.

According to PWD sources, out of the 924 lakes under its control, 45 of them had reached full capacity, while 120 of them had received up to 75 per cent of their storage capacity. Besides, 147 lakes had reached their half capacity level, causing anxiety among the residents since such water levels are not reached in the first spell of rains.

Often, the lakes are bone dry since the district does not receive good rains in the South-West monsoon season. However, this year, all the water bodies had received early rains during the South -West monsoon itself, recharging the groundwater levels in the process. The lake bund in Nandhivaram had already shown cracks and steps are being taken to prevent it from breaking.

Large lakes, including Dhamal and Kolavoi are receiving copious water and the lakes under the control of local bodies too are filling up rapidly. The areas which were flooded in 2015 are already inundated and prevention of floods will depend on lake safety and management of  surplus water.
