CMC Vellore continues to lead in scientific temper

Stressing on the work done by the Institute, Dr Soumya Swaminathan, Director General, Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR) and Deputy Director General, World Health Organisation (WHO), said, “CMC continues to serve as an example in terms of medical research. With the emphasis laid on research, they give students the sufficient push required to motivate the students.” 

Stating that it is reflected in the institution’s vision statement that lays emphasis on excellence in education, service and research, Dr Biju George, vice principal, Research at the Institute, said, “Various initiatives have been taken up to help foster research in CMC. We have a dedicated research office that looks after all aspects of research and the research proposals are reviewed by the Institutional Review Board (IRB), which meets at least 11 times a year for the same. While the issue of funds is seen as a great problem in most institutes, CMC has provided research grant support to students and faculty to perform research within the institution. 

“While a number of the institute’s top papers have been published in high impact factor journals, CMC has had an impact both nationally and internationally through its publications in a number of areas including vaccine preventable diseases, stem cell research. Infectious diseases including tuberculosis, gastro-intestinal diseases including coeliac disease, haematological diseases including acute promyelocytic leukaemia and thalassaemia, stem cell related research and innovative medical education,” added Dr George.
