    Two girls electrocuted in Kodungaiyur; rain toll rises to 5

    Two girls were electrocuted in Kodungaiyur on Wednesday by a live wire from a TANGEDCO pillar box near their house, taking the death toll due to the rain to five in the last three days.

    The deceased, M Yuvasri (9) and P Bhavana (7), were students of Class 4 and 2 respectively at a government school. On Wednesday, they were playing outside their houses at the Slum Clearance Board flat in RR Nagar. 

    At 11 am, they suddenly shouted for help and their parents and neighbours rushed out and saw the girls suffering an electric shock. TANGEDCO office in the locality was immediately alerted and the power supply was stopped. The two girls were rushed to the hospital, but declared brought dead. Police said that the power supply which had been disrupted due to rain resumed around 11 am on Wednesday. “A live wire which was supposed to pass underground had been laid on the ground and this and killed the girls,” a cop said. 

    Heavy to very heavy rain on Thursday: IMD

    The city and state are in for another rainy day on Thursday, as the IMD forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall likely to occur at isolated places over coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. 

    An official from RMC, Chennai said, “Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to occur at isolated places over coastal Tamil Nadu (including Chennai) and Puducherry. Heavy rain is likely to occur at isolated places over interior TN.” The official also added that Chennai recorded 41.3 mm rainfall at the Nungambakkam station while at the Meenambakkam station, 28.8 mm was recorded on Wednesday. Schools will remain closed on Thursday.
