Cop’s wife held; security at exam centre questioned

Even as the police on Tuesday arrested Joicy Joyce, wife of trainee IPS officer Safeer Karim after he was caught for cheating in the UPSC examination, lots of questions are being raised regarding the lack of security and scrutiny at these exam centres. A faculty member at an IAS coaching centre was also arrested on Tuesday for helping Karim.

“When they can impose several restrictions in examination halls where NEET was conducted, why can’t they impose the same and install CCTV cameras where the examinations for IAS and IPS are conducted?” asked Saidai S Duraisamy, former city mayor who runs an IAS coaching centre in Chennai.
“Invigilators should come from other states as well. Anybody caught for malpractice should be banned from appearing for any government job,” Duraisamy told DT Next.
Meanwhile, academician PB Prince Gajendra Babu said, “You don’t have to do it the way NEET was conducted. But invigilators should not allow any gadget inside the hall.”
“There is not much scrutiny at the exam centre,” noted an IAS aspirant, who tried clearing the Mains last year. The invigilators will only ask the candidates not to carry the mobile phone inside, he added, indicating there is not much checking at the examination hall.
Karim also faces possible dismissal if he fails to give a proper explanation for his conduct. The Union Home Ministry, which is the cadre controlling authority of the IPS, has also sought a report from the TN government about Karim’s conduct in the examination on Sunday
