IPS officer does a Vasool Raja in IAS exam, held
In a scene straight from one of Kamal Haasan’s blockbuster Vasool Raja MBBS, a 2015 batch trainee IPS officer, Safeer Karim, who was serving as assistant SP, Nanguneri, tried to answer questions in the General Studies paper using a ‘Bluetooth’ gadget with the help of his wife while appearing for the Civil Service main examination to improve his rank and become an IAS officer.
Chennai
He has been charged with IPC Section 420 (cheating), 120B (criminal conspiracy) along with Sections of IT Act. His wife was also cited as an accused in the FIR. The accused was allegedly found using a Bluetooth gadget to communicate with his wife in Hyderabad when he was writing the examination on Monday at the Presidency Girls’ Higher Secondary School in Egmore.
A native of Ernakulam in Kerala, Safeer had cleared civil services examination and was allotted to TN cadre in 2015 as IPS officer. Safeer was serving as a station in-charge and was under training in Nanguneri sub division in Tirunelveli district till July and later moved to Mussourie for further training. Police said that Safeer attended the civil service examinations to upgrade his all-India rank to get posted as an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer.
Sources said that he was under the surveillance of a central agency following a tip-off that he might indulge in malpractice. As expected, he resorted to ‘outsourcing’ answers through his wife and was caught by a special squad of the UPSC that handed him over to Chennai police.
An ‘intelligent’ Safeer deceived the guards on duty at the exam centre by handing over one phone and managed to get inside with another one with advanced gadgets, police said and added that he allegedly scanned the question paper and sent it to his wife Joicy, who may also be arrested. The trainee officer may be suspended as punishment for the malpractice followed by departmental action, an officer noted.
