FIR against SRM varsity chairman quashed
The Madras High Court has quashed the investigation against SRM University chairman TR Pachamuthu alias Parivendhar in the SRM medical admission scam case.
Chennai
Justice MS Ramesh, while referring to the case being referred back to this court from the Supreme Court (SC), said, “The investigation so far as the petitioner herein is concerned is required to be quashed, since all the claimants have given their consent through affidavits.”
Noting that Pachamuthu has also verified these affidavits and affirmed to be genuine, Justice Ramesh said, “Incidentally, it was the intention of the SC to have the FIR quashed to enable the claimants to receive their respective claims after due adjudication.” “In view of the same, it would be expedient to record the disbursements made by the court commissioner and hence, the case needs to be adjourned for the limited purpose of recording the final report of the commissioner.”
As per the case, after paying several lakhs of rupees to S Madhan for PG medical seats in SRM University last year, the parents lodged a cheating case against him as well as Pachamuthu, since they were neither provided admissions nor their money refunded. Madhan staged a suicide drama and disappeared for months, before being arrested from a hideout in Tirupur. Subsequently, in order to secure bail, Pachamuthu deposited Rs 75 crore and another Rs 10 crore.
However, while MHC refused to quash the case even though it asked aggrieved parents to furnish proof and take refund from the deposit, the Supreme Court directed the quashing of the FIR after recording submissions of the parents that they had no objection to the same. The case has been posted to November 30 to record the report of the court commissioner.
