According to sources, Rakki Raja of Kuyavar Street in Saidapet, who was a school dropout and a suspect in several burglary cases at different police stations in the city, threatened to commit suicide over love failure.

Around 6 am on Thursday, a team of police officers on duty noticed a banner with a statement - ‘I’m very sorry’ - hanging from the cellphone tower in the locality. When they went closer, they saw a man on the tower, sitting next to the banner, approximately 200 feet from the ground.

Immediately, the team alerted fire and police control rooms and 100 police officers and 50 fire personnel rushed to the spot.

Police tried to convince and bring him down with the help of loud speakers. He refused to heed and dropped some papers in which it was written that his was spurned by a girl due to which he has decided to end his life.

In a strange demand, he also sought justice for Anitha, who committed suicide over NEET.

Police officers held talks with him for over four hours, after which he came down. Meanwhile, fire personnel had spread a net as a precautionary measure.

Upon reaching the ground, police rushed him to Royapettah Government Hospital for first-aid to treat minor injuries he had suffered on his neck. Subsequently, the man was booked under Sections 336 (endangering life or personal safety of others), 309 attempted suicide and 324 (Voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means) of the IPC.
