The DMK, represented by its organisation secretary RS Bharathi, contended that after the publication of the ‘Mother Roll of voters’ of the constituency on January 1, 2017, followed by the supplementary list published on March 23, 2017, a perusal of the voters list and field verification revealed various discrepancies such as double entries, multiple entries, multiple voters with same voter identification numbers, non-deletion of shifted voters and dead voters.

Subsequently, after the earlier scheduled by-election was rescinded another draft voter list dated October 3, 2017, was published and the same has been found to be replete with bogus voters.

He further submitted that several representations to the Assistant Electoral Officer, Chennai Corporation, enclosing details of double entries, multiple entries etc were made. However, nothing has been done by the Chief Electoral Officer of Tamil Nadu and District Electoral Officer despite the representation containing particulars about the entries, ward number, part number, shifted voters, double entry voters and dead voters totalling to 43, 861 bogus voters. He also noted that even in the CD given by the Election Commission, it is admitted that around 17,000 voters are to be deleted. Hence, it is clear that there are errors in the voters list and the same ought to be rectified.

However, due to extraneous reasons, these bogus voters are not being deleted and that the Chennai Corporation officials are working hand in glove with the ruling party and under their instruction, they have not deleted any of the bogus voters, Bharathi added. The plea is likely to be taken up for hearing on Friday.
