Threatened to pay up debt, woman jumps into Cooum
A 38-year-old woman jumped into Cooum river in Thousand Lights after she was allegedly threatened to repay a sum of Rs 30,000 forthwith. The victim, S Amulu of Rangoon Street, who was rushed to Royapettah Government Hospital, is said to be out of danger.
Chennai
Amulu and her husband Merlin are daily wage labourers. It is said that the couple borrowed Rs 30,000 from a woman in the neighbourhood.Â
On Tuesday night, the woman demanded her money back in a threatening tone after which Amulu ran to the Cooum river and jumped into it. Shocked neighbours rescued her.
Thousand Lights police who are investigating the incident, told DT Next that both the victim and the accused decided to end the issue amicably between themselves, and hence no case was registered.Â
After four of a family set themselves ablaze at Tirunelveli Collector’s office over usury threats, the number of such cases being reported from across the state has gone up.Â
