Speaking about the initiative, Dr A Nirmala, Principal and Secretary, Ethiraj College, said that a 500 litre capacity reverse osmosis (RO) plant was inaugurated in Nemilichery to ensure drinking water supply for the village. She added that the institution wanted to sensitise the younger generation to work together for the betterment of the society.
“We have various clubs in the college dedicated to social causes, but we wanted to streamline the efforts to create an impact. Our students will be conducting awareness campaigns, which kicked off on Wednesday with a session on dengue prevention. Following this, medical camps and women’s health assessment sessions will be organised, as a few NGOs have volunteered to contribute. Our focus, over the next year or two, will be to help set up and streamline self-help groups, to improve the livelihoods of the residents,” said the Principal.
On Wednesday, the villages were adopted in the presence of E Sundaravalli, Tiruvallur Collector and K Pandiarajan, Avadi MLA. Students too enjoyed interacting with the residents, actively taking part in the process of improving the villages’ infrastructure. Monisha Sharma, a final year B. Com (Bank management) student and President of the Rotaract Club, explained, “My classmates and I had a wonderful experience, while interacting with the people from these two villages. When we distributed notebooks for the school children or medical kits to the adults, they were so excited. They said they would teach us skills and were enthusiastic.”
