Engineer hangs self, Blue Whale Challenge suspected

A 25-year-old youth committed suicide by hanging himself at Alamathy in Thiruvallur district. Before taking the extreme step, the youth had slashed his hand with a blade leading to suspicion that he could be the latest victim of ‘blue whale’ game. He was always glued to mobile phone and laptop, according to his father.

However, police said that it looked like a suicide due to depression and are investigating further. Police identified the deceased as T Dinesh, son of a farmer in Alamathy near Ponneri. The youth, an engineer working in Mumbai, had come home during Deepavali holidays.

Dinesh locked himself inside the house when his parents returned after shopping. As their repeated calls were unanswered, they broke open the door and found their son dead, police said.

His family members told police that Dinesh was under depression for quite some time now.  “In the suicide note that was found in the house, he had said that no one was responsible for his death. It was also stated that he wants to know what lies beyond death and, so he is ending his life,” police said.

His parents, who noticed him always glued to the phone and laptop, allegedly told the police that he was playing some game.

“He had slashed his hand twice with a sharp weapon triggering suspicion that he might be into Blue Whale game. But, we don’t think so,” the police said.

The ‘Blue Whale’ is an Internet game that has a series of dangerous tasks assigned to its players, for a period of 50 days, with the final challenge being to commit suicide.
