City police gear up to tackle monsoon woes
With the northeast monsoon around the corner, the City Police Commissioner will be holding the last round of internal meeting with senior police officials to finalise the plan to handle extreme situations arising out of rains/floods. The floods of the year 2015 and Vardah cyclone in the year 2016 seems to have forced the Chennai police to get ready for monsoon even before it started.

Besides identifying low lying areas and possible shelters for accommodating evacuated people, all the police stations were told to get ready to get tree pruning machines, identify firms from where earth movers can be organised with short notice.
“They were also told to identify swimmers among them and places and streets where boats will be needed to rescue people. Ropes and torches are also to kept ready to be used in case of emergencies. Last year we found even members of NDRF were not even having torches to carry out rescue works in the night,” a senior police official.
Police stations were also told to identify the NGOs ready to work during floods and start liasoning with them. Police officials were also told to check on the bad roads, particularly those with potholes and inform about it to the zonal offices of Chennai corporation.
Once the field officers are free from their Deepavali works, they would focus on the monsoon duty. Police personnel need to be trained and kept in readiness for deployment under short notice, a senior officer said.
Apart from the police, all district collectors will have to ready a district disaster management plan in which other stakeholders of the district administration would play a key role. The Fire and Rescue department is also expected to chart out a plan of action under the district disaster Management plan in order to respond to any type of disaster.
