Dawn William of Blue Cross said, “Though we have our ambulance services available throughout the year, we have asked volunteers to put extra effort during Deepavali and work throughout the three days in shift basis. They are headed by an experienced team leader. The volunteers include working professionals and college students. We also have doctors and para-meds available round the clock.” They could be reached on 044 2235 4959.
Animal activists rescue animals from all over the city. Last year, Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals rescued over 20 animals and treated more than 100 animals during the festival. “Every year, during Deepavali, we have 24/7 ambulance service on standby and the doctors on duty throughout the day. We could be reached on 094441 00287,” he added.
While Deepavali is a festival of joy for humans, bursting of high decibel crackers often upsets the animals. The hearing capacity of animals is much more compared to humans, and they tend to run away when they hear loud noise.
“We are giving away collars with the name, number and address printed on it. In case, a pet runs away it could be safely brought back to the owners. Apart from that, we will be keeping a rescue team ready to attend to emergency rescue operations. On October 17, 18 and 19 we will have a rescue team ready to attend to emergency rescue operations for animals that suffer burns. This rescue team is for whole of Chennai city and we can be reached on 9884071136. Injured animals will be picked up, given first aid and if need they will be sbe sheltered,” said G Arun Prasanna of People For Cattle in India (PFCI).
