    1.8 kg of non-biodegradable waste collected on Wednesday

    The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) workers collected 1,87,219 kilograms of non-biodegradable waste in the city on Wednesday.

    According to the Solid Waste Management Rules 2016, segregated waste should be collected from all household. Keeping with this, the Corporation had implemented source segregation from October 2, where biodegradable waste would be collected daily, and non-biodegradable waste would be collected once a week, on Wednesdays. 

    This Wednesday, the civic body collected 1,87,219 kilograms of non-biodegradable waste in the city. The zonewise breakup in kilograms includes: Tiruvottiyur (16,184), Manali (59,010), Madhavaram (12,896), Tondiarpet (6,944), Royapuram (3,200), Thiru-viKa Nagar (5,738), Ambattur (16,318), Anna Nagar (11,329), Teynampet (2,929), Kodambakkam (12,364), Valasaravakkam (14,550), Alandur (3,835), Adyar (5,198), Perungudi (9,048) and Shollinganallur (8,126). Of this, Manali accounted for the lion’s share of non-biodegradable waste collected in the city. 

    Bulk generators have been directed by the city Corporation to install equipment to manage biodegradable waste within their premises. The civic body had given them two months’ time to get the appropriate solutions installed to manage the waste generated in-situ.
