Brace up to tackle monsoon, Minister advises officials

In a high-level meeting chaired by Local Administration Minister SP Velumani to review the precautionary and preventive measures taken by CMWSSB on Wednesday, the minister focused on ensuring that the board will be on standby to face any eventuality during northeast monsoon.
“The CMWSSB officials should identify places, where rainwater clogged during 2015 floods and ensure it doesn’t happen again,” the minister said and instructed the officials to monitor those places.
Stating that proper link passages should be connected between rivers and big canals and storm water drains, the minister said such measure would pave the way for rainwater to flow freely without stagnation.
“Hyacinth in all the waterbodies should completely be removed. In order to remove water from sub-ways, high-voltage electric pumps should be kept ready,” he pointed out. Similarly, the officials should ensure enough chain saw and axe to remove the fallen trees, Velumani said.
Schools, community halls and other buildings should be kept ready to accommodate people in case of flood. “To ensure excessive rainwater is not merged with sea, the PWD officials should desilt mouth of Adyar, Kosasthalaiyar rivers and Buckingham canal,” he added.
