T Nagar CCTVs go hi-tech to nab ‘familiar’ suspects in crowd
Nearly four years after a failed attempt by the Chennai police in merging a face recognition technology into the surveillance camera network at T Nagar to nab repeat offenders during the festive season, Commissioner of Police AK Viswanathan on Sunday launched an updated face detecting technology.

The technology will detect faces of known criminals, if their images are already loaded in the software, from the crowd. It will thus alert the cops about their presence in the crowd of shoppers thronging the street.
“Technology keeps getting updated. We are using an improved version. So this time we hope it does not fail us,” Viswanathan told DTNext after integrating the technology to the CCTV network at T Nagar. The police have added 150 new surveillance cameras in T Nagar for the festival season along with 250 cameras with private participation.
The surveillance cameras will actively monitor the crowd at T Nagar bus stand, north and south Usman Road, Ranganathan Street, Panagal Park upto Vani Mahal.
An Assistant Commissioner and his team are in charge of going through the CCTV footage at the special control room set up in T Nagar. The police have also erected five watch towers besides deploying cops in civvies to keep vigil.
At least 200 policemen, including six inspectors and 18 sub-inspectors under the supervision of two Assistant Commissioners, are deployed for security along with 100 home guard volunteers. There are public addressing systems at 40 places to create awareness among the shoppers. An emergency number 94981-62626 has also been issued.
What is face recognition tech
The software is integrated to the existing surveillance systems by extracting faces in real time from video streams and matching against a watch list of suspects. When the system identifies an individual from the suspects list, an alert is sounded, so that police can take necessary action
