Relief for fish traders at Chinthadripet

Tenants of Chinthadripet fish market heaved a sigh of relief on Friday following the Madras High Court’s interim injunction against defendants, including JMH Imran Khan, son of Congress MP JM Haroon Rasheed, who had purchased the market from original owners.

The Chinthadripet Fish & Perishable Products Traders Society had moved the Madras High Court over the new owners ordering the existing tenants to either pay the new rents which the owners demanded or to vacate their stalls.

“Nineteen wholesalers and hundreds of retailers including fisherwomen use the market for their business. If they were made to vacate the stalls then all of them would lose their livelihood,” said S Anbu a fish vendor.

The court ordered that the defendants, “or their men, agent or anybody claiming through them are hereby restrained by an order of interim injunction from disturbing the possession by the plaintiff and its members.”
