Court refuses to quash FIR against SRM chairman

The Madras High Court, while refusing to quash the criminal complaints against SRM University Vice-Chancellor TR Pachamuthu and his estranged associate Madhan for receiving bribes for grant of medical seats, has appointed an advocate commissioner to enable the 136 students to claim the respective amounts from the Rs.85 crore deposited by Patchamuthu in the trial court.

Justice MS Ramesh, while granting relief to the medical aspirants who had parted with the money, directed the Central Crime Branch (CCB) to continue investigation and file a final report within eight weeks.

The judge also appointed the former Chief Justice of Jammu and Kashmi High Court N Paul Vasanthakumar as commissioner for disbursing the amounts to the claimants.

The case relates to complaints lodged by 136 parents and students who had paid over Rs 85 crore to Madhan and his associate Sudhir for MBBS, MS and MD admissions in SRM institutions. On May 29, 2016, Madhan absconded leaving behind a suicide note saying that the money collected had been handed over to Pachamuthu.

Pachamuthu had contended that since the averments in the complaint implicate Madhan alone and since no offence is made out against him, the FIR is liable to be quashed.
