IIT-M’s alumni ready to recover green cover lost during Cyclone Vardah

The 650 trees that were lost were non-native species, stated the Institute. The green drive will be conducted in two phases, at a total budget of Rs 25 lakh. Around 1,200 saplings are being planted (or transplanted) during this campaign. IIT is ensuring that only native species are chosen for this drive, from the list approved by the Government of Tamil Nadu.

Speaking about this regreening initiative, Prof R Nagarajan, Dean of Alumni and International Relations, IIT M, said, “Alumni have vivid memories of the greenery in our campus. We see this as a great opportunity for them to give back to the alma mater by contributing to her re-greening. This campaign has, not surprisingly, attracted many first-time donors, with the number now exceeding 150.” The trees and saplings are being sourced from Agricultural Engineering College and Research Institute, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Kumulur, Tiruchy district. The first phase of the green initiative will involve plantation of approximately 600 trees, each costing Rs 2,000, including the cost of the tree, tree guards, labour and maintenance. IIT M has raised around Rs 17.4 lakh from 181 donors. The green drive has received funds for 870 trees as against the 1,200 trees they plan to plant and nurture.
