NGT to move into renovated Kalas Mahal soon
From September 2, the National Green Tribunal (NGT), Southern Zone will have a new address – at the renovated Kalas Mahal — which was once a part of the Chepauk Palace, a heritage structure.

The Southern Bench, however, still lacks appointment of judicial and expert members to continue its functions.
The new premises will have three courts, instead of the current two courts in the facility at Arumbakkam. A source from NGT said that the location was decided based on the accessibility and distance from the Madras High Court. On September 2, the e-filing system will also be inaugurated, ensuring that all applications and appeals can be filed online.
Meanwhile, the NGT has been unable to function in fullstrength due to non-appointment of judicial members. “For the last two years, no judicial and expert members have been appointed. With many existing members retiring soon, the NGT will become non-functional if no members are appointed,” said a source in NGT.
