JACTTO-GEO to stage protest today
The Joint Action Council of Teachers Organisations-Government Employees Organisations (JACTTO-GEO), an umbrella organisation of nearly 70 organisations, has decided to organise a one-day token strike on August 22, pressing for various demands.

The teachers plan to stay off work for a day in an attempt to gain the attention of the government. Several organisations have already extended their support to the strike.
This comes after a large-scale protest was organised earlier this month, where thousands of government teachers assembled at Chepauk. Traffic was disrupted in many places in the city due to the protest.
“Despite several attempts to voice out, the government has still not invited them for talks or taken any action to solve their problems. If the situation remains the same, the government teachers have no other alternative except to organise an indefinite strike from September 7,” say the organisers.
Their demands include the implementation of the seventh pay commission, retaining the old pension scheme for those employees who had joined the service after April 2003 among others. They have also demanded 20 per cent of the arrears immediately to the employees as an interim measure.
The directorate of government examinations has sent a circular assuring protection for those government employees who do not want to participate in the stir and decide to work on August 22.
