Deepa vows to challenge move in court

Within a few hours of Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami announcing that Veda Nilayam, the residence of the late Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa in Poes Garden, will become a memorial, Jayalalithaa’s niece and founder of the MAD Peravai, Deepa Jayakumar condemned the state’s decision and said that she would challenge it in court.

Speaking to reporters on Thursday evening at her residence, Deepa said, “Veda Nilayam is our hereditary property and they have no right to declare it a government memorial without consulting us.” Elaborating further, she said that the state government should have at least sought their opinion. “They should have at least issued us a notice; it is not as if we are dead. We have the right to maintain the property and we have taken all legal steps to reclaim the property, including filing a case but there has been no response from the other side.” She also said that she was not even aware of who was in possession of the property as of now. “We have tried to find out, but the concerned departments have been evading the information. We are even trying through RTI,” Deepa said.

Referring to the formation of a one-man inquiry commission, Deepa, while welcoming the move, wondered about the long delay in announcing it. “Why has Sasikala not given any explanation for Jayalalithaa’s death till now? This is a drama played out for making political gains and for their own nefarious ends” she alleged.
