AIADMK MLA Natraj acts after public hit streets over bad water

Residents of VC Garden street staged a protest in front of the Mandaveli RTO, protesting the pipelaying works which have left the roads in a bad state. The residents also said that people living here were facing a water problem for the last 20 days, as sewage water is mixed up with their water supply.

VC Garden First Street is used by many students and parents, as the PS Senior Secondary School is located here. However, residents said they are facing the road issue for over a year now.

Sivaranjini, a resident, who protested on Thursday, said that she was agitated at the lack of action by the authorities. “A group of residents had protested ten days ago and were told that the work will be completed in three days. However, no action has been taken. When it rains, the road becomes slushy and is totally unmotorable. On Thursday morning, a lady and a child, on their way to school on a motor bike, fell due to the bad road. It is equally difficult for residents,” she said.

Advocate Sathyanarayanan pointed out that they don’t get a clear response from the authorities. “Often, sewage water is found contaminating the Metro Water supply. The bore water is unusable. If you speak to the Corporation, they blame the Metro Water, who in turn blame the contractor. Nothing changes and the residents suffer. There are 78 homes in the First Street,” added the 45-year-old resident.

Jayaram Venkatesan of Arappor Iyakkam said that lack of accountability between Corporation and Metro Water is causing this problem. “Metro Water is laying a drainage line in Mylapore to increase the capacity. They dug up the road before the last monsoon. We objected back then, but the road was dug and the work not completed due to the rains. Without laying the pipe, the road was closed. Now, the Corporation is not relaying the road because the Metro Water work is incomplete. We have been suffering for because of bad roads for about a year,” he added.
