Girl run over by private college bus

The victim Achita was pursuing her first year undergraduation in Visual Communications at the Shri Shankarlal Sundarbai Sashun Jain College for women in T Nagar and lived with her parents Kannan and Chitra at their house in Zarkaria Colony, Choolaimedu.

On Monday, Achita attended classes and was returning home in her scooter at 2 pm when the mishap took place. “The young woman had just crossed the Gokulam building on Arcot Road when the bus belonging to a private engineering college knocked her down while trying to overtake the motorist,” a police official said.

He added that Achita immediately lost her balance and was crushed under the wheels of the bus. Locals gathered at the spot called for an ambulance and the student was rushed to the Kilpauk Medical College and Hospital with severe injuries on her head and legs. “However, doctors declared her brought dead at the hospital,” police said.

Upon receiving information, the Pondy Bazaar traffic police rushed to the spot and arrested the bus driver Velayutham of Seyyur in Thiruvannamalai district. Further investigation is on.

Following the accident, the residents have raised complaints regarding the unruly private college buses causing inconvenience to the commuters in the locality.
