Sambar-less diet leaves 84 per cent in city protein-deficient: Study
Sambar, the staple diet of a majority of people across Tamil Nadu, has lost its position on the diet chart, mostly among the working population.

With the change in lifestyle habits of the people, fast food and easy to cook meals, like tamarind rice, tomato rice, lemon rice and the like, have slowly crept into the diet charts of the urban population. As a result, it has been found that the city is highly protein deficient.Â
According to a study conducted by the Indian Market Research Bureau (IMRB), titled ‘Understanding Protein Myths and Gaps among Indians’, 84 per cent of the city’s urban population is protein deficient. Attributing it to the fact that protein confronts several myths, nutritionists said that increased awareness on protein requirements of each individual is the need of the hour.Â
Standing second among seven cities found to be highly protein deficient, it was found that the people here have poor awareness on the levels of protein required in their daily intake.Â
