In the first three days of counselling, the trend suggests the popularity of these courses. Out of the 2,898 students called on the first day of the counselling, 2329 seats were allotted. Here Electronics and Communication Engineering had 625 allotments, followed by the Computer Science stream with 434 seats allotted. Mechanical Engineering department saw 403 intakes.
On day two, around 5942 students were called and 4669 seats were allotted. When it comes to distribution of seats department-wise on the second day, 1,470 seats were taken up by Electronics and Communications, 1,077 by Computer Science and Engineering and 1,014 for Mechanical Engineering.
Departments like aeronautical engineering and automobile engineering are yet to catch up. Educationalists say that the lure of placement makes students choose these departments.
“Though companies who come for placements choose from all departments, students from Computer Science, ECE and mechanical get placed first and almost everyone finds a job by the end of it. This makes students think that they have a strong shot at employment,” said educationalist S Somasundaram, adding that some students go by the department and others by the institution.
“Institutions like College of Engineering, Guindy and MIT are top options of the students. Even if they don’t like the course they wish to choose the second-best option in the same college. This is because of the reputation of the institution and the companies it attracts. Otherwise, there are some who move to another college but with the department they want.”
