New block in Adyar Cancer Institute soon

The initiative is being taken up as part of the plan to upgrade the institute as a state Cancer Institute under the scheme of National Program for the Prevention and Control of Cancer, Diabetes, Cardio-Vascular Diseases and Stroke (NPCDCS) by the Government of India with contribution from the state.

Health Minister Dr C Vijaya Baskar had announced that the Institute was being upgraded as the State Level Apex Centre at a cost of Rs 120 crore. 

Accordingly, the first instalment, a sum of Rs 89.84 crore, had already been released. 

Stating that they are making arrangements to meet the increasing number of cancer cases each year, Dr TG Sagar, Director, Adyar Cancer Institute, told DT Next, “The new block will have more beds for patients in need of intensive care as well as seven additional beds for bone marrow transplantation. We have a month’s waiting list of patients for surgeries, therefore, we are also going to have more operation theatres.”

The hospital, at present, has 512 beds and around 400 to 500 out patients a day.
