The Minister said this during the special calling attention motion by 26 legislators, including Leader of Opposition MK Stalin. DMK legislator M Subramanian said, “With all the catchments going dry, Metro Water officials are supplying water sourced from ground water and desalination plants.

However, Chennai needs 83 crore litres of water a day, but only 40 crore litres of water is being supplied currently.” Replying to this, Velumani said that water scarcity is prevailing in all the constituencies.

“The government is keen to tide over the crisis and water is being tapped from borewells, stone quarries and open wells to meet the need,” he said. The Minister assured that preliminary works to draw water from Porur lake have been completed. “Water from the lake will be supplied from Saturday.

A total of three million litres of water will be supplied to the residents,” he said and added that the government was continuing to explore the possibilities of drawing  water from various sources. Chennai Metro Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB) officials had already commissioned a temporary treatment plant on the banks of Porur lake. According to officials, the treated water will be sent to Veeranam pipe that passes through the lake.
