‘An officer with clean track record should be made DGP’

DMK working president and Leader of Opposition MK Stalin on Friday came down heavily on the state and opposed any move to extend the term of DGP T K Rajendran, who retired on Friday as DGP (Law and Order). He said Rajendran has a blemished record in the ‘gutka diaries.’

In a statement, he charged the government stating, “The Income Tax raid was clearly showing that Rajendran was involved in the corrupt practice and he took bribe from the gutka traders. However, the state government, not taking this serious issue into consideration, has extended his tenure.” The move has brought disrepute not only to the police department, but also to the entire state, he added.

Stalin said that when he raised the issue in the Assembly of the DGP taking Rs 60 lakh from gutka traders, Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami replied that the DVAC is investigating in this regard. “But, his reply was a mere eyewash,” he rued.

Stating that the state police were functioning on a par with the Scotland Yard police during the DMK regime, Stalin castigated the EPS-led government for appointing such corrupt officer in the top rank. “Observing this ridiculous activity, the BJP at the Centre is remaining a mute spectator. It raises suspicion that whether the Centre is merely turning a blind eye to get votes in the ensuing presidential elections,” the LoP said. He questioned that at a time, when Rajendran has to face an inquiry for reportedly taking bribe, how can other honest police officials working under him could serve properly.

The DMK working president demanded the government should not give an extension to Rajendran. “Rajendran should be relieved of his post and the government should not ignore senior IPS officers, instead appoint an honest official to the top post,” he added.
