38% voter names in RK Nagar found to be fake
Going by the statistics from the Election Commission, the DMK’s allegation of duplicity in electoral rolls of the RK Nagar Assembly constituency gathered steam as over 38 per cent of the voters that figured in the petition in this regard were flagged to have either shifted or absent or dead by the subsequent purification drive by the Election Commission.

“As the by-election was rescinded by the EC, it could be held anytime and the DMK requests the EC to purify rolls by deleting ineligible voters and voters having double or multiple entries,” RS Bharathi, organising secretary, DMK, stated in a petition submitted to state’s Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Rajesh Lakhoni, on May 9.
According to sources, the DMK leaders had earlier cited as much as 40,848 voters figuring in the poll rolls of RK Nagar constituency. As a result, the CEO ordered an inquiry.
The field study, which rendered the statistics of 575 voters figuring in the petition as being absent from the address provided, while 1,939 had died and 13,013 voters had shifted to a different address and had not updated their details.
Sources said notices were issued in all 15,573 cases flagged by the EC staff, and the process of purification of the electoral rolls is on. “The drive was not limited to the RK Nagar constituency and efforts are on to purify the state’s poll roll comprising the electorate of all-234 Assembly constituencies,” sources added.
Meanwhile, the state unit of the Election Commission has unveiled its month-long massive enrolment drive for students from 1,460 higher education institutions including colleges, and technical institutes, beginning July 1.
“The drive, though limited to institutions, will have its focus on students aged between 18 and 20, while accepting forms from older students as well,” Chief Electoral Officer(CEO) Rajesh Lakhoni told reporters.
“In addition to it, special camps would be held on July 9 and July 23 (both Sundays) across the state, wherein all kinds of applications ranging from inclusion, deletion, correction, and shifting would be received and processed,” he added.
