Despite the brouhaha surrounding NEET in the state, the number of medical aspirants has gone up this year. A total of 8,379 application forms for MBBS and BDS courses for the academic year 2017-18 sold on Tuesday, the first day of issue of forms.

With 6,542 forms for government colleges and 1,837 forms for Management courses, the number is higher than those sold on Day 1 last year, i.e, 6,123. Stating that the forms were sold at Rs 500 each, Dr Selvaraj, Secretary, Selection Committee, said, “This year, there are no facilities for online applications.”

The applications for the 22 colleges will be issued until 5 pm on July 7, while the last day for receipt of the forms is 5 pm on July 8, Dr Edwin Joe, Director, Medical Education, said. “Despite NEET this year, we expect more students to apply as compared to last year’s applications (26,313), including online ones,” he added.

The first phase of counselling will begin on July 17 after the government declares the rank list on July 14.  It may be recalled that Health Minister C Vijaya Baskar, had, only last week, informed in the Assembly, that the current academic year admissions in medical colleges in the state would be governed by the NEET rankings through a GO which allocates 85 per cent quota for students from state board, and the rest 15 per cent from other boards.

However, if the bills that were passed in the assembly get the assent of the President before the declaration of the Rank List on July 14, admissions will be based on the students’ Class 12 results.
