Speaking before flagging off an anti-drug trafficking rally in Koyambedu on the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, the Commissioner said that just like terrorism flourishes because of the drug market, the rise in the number of crimes can also be attributed to the availability and consumption of drugs.

“Annually, 1,90,000 people die of drug abuse the world over. We have been monitoring if drugs are being sold near college and school campuses. We have detained traffickers under the Goondas Act. It will continue,” he said. The commissioner also said that police are also involved in rehabilitation the misled youth.

“Youngsters should know that drugs will transform them into anti-social elements. We have traced 64 school dropouts from Kannagi Nagar and re-admitted them in schools,” he said.

H M Jayaram, Additional Commissioner (North Zone), Prem Anand Sinha, Deputy Commissioner (North (Traffic)), Rupesh Kumar Meena, Assistant Commissioner (Intelligence) and Dr M Sudhakar of Serene Life Hospital also participated at the event.

About 400 students participated in the rally and carried placards with anti-drug messages to create awareness among the people.

Speaking to DTNext, psychologist Queen Elizabeth said that most of the students who come for therapy are addicted to cannabis because it is cheap and easily available.

“They get it at the campus entrances through agents. Detoxification alone won’t help as is believed by parents. They need a threepronged treatment which includes reducing the dependency on drugs and addressing the root-cause which led to the addiction,” she said.
