City tout helped techie fool family in faking pregnancy
The bizarre case of a young woman faking pregnancy even to her husband and purchasing a newborn from a child trafficker could be the tip of the iceberg, District Child Protection Officer Siva Jayakumar said.
Chennai
Elaborating on the case, he said until last week, Padmini had claimed that the child was hers and it was only after he approached the court to rescue the child and obtained it, did the young woman confess to the crime. “After getting the orders to rescue the child, we interrogated Padmini and uncovered the truth. Padmini had got in touch with a citybased child trafficker and fixed up a deal to purchase a newborn male,“ he said.
The child trafficker later went to Delhi, got in touch with the biological parents of the child and signed a contract with them for adoption of the child. Armed with the contract, he brought the 10-day-old infant to Chennai and handed over the baby to Padmini and her parents. “Upon interrogation, we have found the identity of the woman involved in trafficking the child but the police are yet to interrogate her,” Jayakumar said.
Police and child welfare officials suspect that this could be a part of a larger child trafficking racket and that several skeletons might tumble out as the investigations proceed. Speaking to this newspaper, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Muthazahagu said that the police were investigating the case. “We are presently investigating and questioning all those connected with the case,” Muthazhagu said. When asked on the delay in the investigation, Muthazhagu said that the case has already gone to court and proceedings were on. “We will wait for the outcome of the court case before taking any further action in the case,” he said.
