Arambakkam police under the supervision of Gummidipoondi Superintendent Sibi Chakravarthi found the lorries loaded with bulls during their regular vehicle check around 4 am and cornered them. When enquired, the drivers, Venkatrathnam (40) and Seenu Nayak (40), told police that the bulls were being transported from Guntur in Andhra Pradesh to Kerala for slaughter.

Police arrested the duo for transporting the cattle without any safety precaution. The bulls have been sent to a goshala at Panuvalpet. Sources said that at least 10 vehicles carrying cattle meant for slaughter cross Tamil Nadu border through Gummidipoondi every day with the police knowledge. However, Superintendent Sibi Chakravarthi, who took charge recently, personally visits the check post, resulting in a series of seizures, sources added.

700 kg of ration rice seized

During the vehicle check, the police also found a Chennai man smuggling nearly 700 kg of ration rice in a car to Andhra and handed him over to the food cell of TN police. The accused has been identified as John Badshah of Perambur. These apart, six sand-laden lorries were also intercepted. Police said that the sand was being smuggled to Chennai from Andhra Pradesh and all six drivers were arrested.
