Electric bus trial run held from Pallavan House to Beach
Tamil Nadu’s Transport Department, which is planning to introduce electric buses in the city, conducted a trial run on Monday. Transport Minister MR Vijayabaskar and top transport officials inspected the bus and travelled in it from Pallavan House to Gandhi Statue via War Memorial.

“Public transportation is an important department and we want to improve the services provided to the people. We are keen on introducing electric buses,” said the minister. “We approached two leading automobile manufacturing companies for building electric buses. We will float a tender to manufacture the buses and the process will begin soon. The buses will be introduced when we have the road infrastructure to accommodate them,” said a transport department official.
Talking about the development, V Krishnamurthy, Managing Director of Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC), said, “We have submitted our technical reports on the trial and the next run will be held soon.” When asked about the number of such buses that the corporation was planning to introduce, the MD said, “It is too early to decide. First, we will monitor the performance of the vehicles during the trial run and then take a call.”
ALL ABOUT THE TEST VEHICLE
- Number of seats: 31 (including driver)
- Each bus has two to three batteries
- One battery would have slow charger, which would be used during night time for halted buses
- One battery would have fast charger and it would be used for emergency purposes
